Today, I believe we helped to give victims of Domestic Violence a way to help keep them safer. Today, Gov Inslee signed into law my Tiffany Hill Act: SB 5149. This bill was named after Tiffany who was a victim of domestic violence herself. She was killed, in front of her children, in her car in her kids’ school parking lot two days before Thanksgiving this past year.
The law will allow for real-time notification given to the victim when the abuser gets within a determined geographical area if the victim has a protection order against them. We all believe Tiffany would be here today if she’d been given a notice on her cell phone that her estranged husband had been sitting in wait in the parking lot for 30 minutes prior to her being killed.
I am so very grateful of the commitment and tenacity Tiffany’s friends and support system gave Tiffany and continued after her death to get this bill through the process this year. I
I’d like to also thank my colleagues that were also a big help as this bill moved through the process in the legislature. Rep. Sharon Wylie, Rep Monica Stonier, Rep Roger Goodman and Senator Jamie Pedersen.
One of my favorite African Proverbs:
If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
This bill is a prime example of that.
